This is my first update in forever. So read and comment. I love comments. ^^


As I sit here, in my long hours of studying I wonder about things. These things being, God, life after death, my future in college and my cultural roots. As an American, I lack understanding of my roots, less it’s the holidays when my mother and Aunt scramble around the kitchen like nesting birds trying to make everything just so perfect. They prepare the weirdest Americanized Italian and polish food you’d ever see. Honestly I think it tastes great. My spot of German in me is rarely celebrated less my dad is talking about beer and Hitler. (no he German blood in me came over before the Nazi invasions)

I am the 4th generation in my family who has lived in America. My grandmother was the daughter of polish immigrants and my grandfather on my mother’s side was the son of Italian immigrants. And I mean real sicilie Italians. I am unsure the story of my father’s side, but my father is half Italian and German. So I am More Italian as it would play out.

But as you probably guess as the generations continue traditions slowly fade away out of the lives of the next generation. so I sometimes wonder, what it is like to like in countries with a deeper culture roots. What dose America have? We are a cease pool of cultures mixed making a giant soup of a lost heritage.

What is it to be an American? Well we maybe a free country, and took our idea of democracy from the Greeks and Native Americans, but what are we really? I wish I could say I grew in a place where everyone was the same, and their was this sense of cultural belonging and a shared idea of beliefs in the community.

I suppose you could say America has that, But what about for the immigrants living here moving to new places outside of a city or community where they all spoke the same language?

What am I trying to say… is that I wish I was in a place where there was more of an original heritage. The only I have to rely on is my mothers cooking, my dads drinking and America’s 4th of July and veterans day so that I may celebrate the place I was born and raised as an American. Where my ideals were based on the words “FREEDOM!” , and how Axis Powers Hetalia puts it, Nosey and loud.

What I am trying to say is, How do you guys remember your heritage? Dose your family celebrate it in depth or is it glazed over like my mothers?
